Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to Perform at the Apollo
New album, “The Offense of the Drum,” due on May 6
Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will present a newly commissioned work as part of the 80th anniversary season of Harlem’s Apollo Theater. The premiere of the “Afro Latin Jazz Suite,” part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, will take place on May 10. The event coincides with the 65th anniversary of the ''Afro Cuban Jazz Suite,'' by Arturo O’Farrill’s father, Afro Latin music pioneer Chico O'Farrill. Arturo will feature this work along with the world premiere of his own piece.
The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will be augmented for the performance by Randy Weston, Billy Harper, Lewis Nash, Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón and Café. The evening serves as the CD release event for Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra's latest recording, The Offense of the Drum, which will be released on Motéma Music on May 6.
The Offense of the Drum, according to a press release, “examines the role of the drum as a vehicle for resistance and liberation, with references to the oppressive policies set forth by New York City police in the '90s.” The recording features 28 different types of drums from around the world. It was co-produced by O'Farrill, Todd Barkan, Eric Oberstein and Kabir Sehgal.
