NYC Premiere of New York Art Quartet Documentary Set for May 18

This year marks group's 50th anniversary

The New York City premiere of The Breath Courses Through Us, a new documentary film about the 1960s group the New York Art Quartet, will take place May 18 at Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave., at 2nd Street, at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Alan Roth, the film, according to a press release, “focuses on the group’s 35-year reunion, while reaching back through their recollections of their foundations and innovative musical ideas.” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the group.

Preceding the premiere will be Michael Snow’s rarely screened 1964 film New York Eye and Ear Control, with the music and images of Albert Ayler, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Don Cherry, Sunny Murray, Gary Peacock. This N.Y.C. premiere takes place almost 50 years to the month when the group was officially formed after Tchicai and Rudd met Milford Graves in Michael Snow’s loft.
