Sonny Rollins to Release "Road Shows, Vol. 3" in May
Album will be distributed by Sony's OKeh label
Critics and aficionados, start thinking about those year-end Top 10 lists now. Saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins is slated to release Road Shows, Vol. 3 on May 6. The recording begins a distribution deal between Rollins’ imprint, Doxy, and the OKeh Records label, which Sony Music Masterworks re-launched last year.
If you’ve been paying attention to jazz recordings over the past decade, you’re no doubt familiar with the poll-topping first two volumes of Rollins’ live Road Shows series. (We’re partial toward the second installment, which featured a recording of Rollins’ historic summit with Ornette Coleman at the Town Hall in 2010.) The forthcoming volume features, according to a press release, six tracks recorded between 2001 and 2012 in Japan, France and St. Louis. Rollins’ composition “Patanjali” will appear on record for the first time. Previously, the Road Shows series was released via Doxy and distributed by the Universal-owned Emarcy label.
Since re-launching in 2013, OKeh has released albums by Bill Frisell, John Medeski, Craig Handy and others.
