Willie & Lobo
Siete
Narada Media

The hard-working gypsy flamenco duo Willie and Lobo offer a heady mix of speed, style and craftsmanship on Siete to leave listeners as awed by the musicianship as they are captivated by the melodies. Living up to the self-penned label as "surf gypsy" music, the duo starts off with the captivating percussive stomp, hammering fast guitar pluck and ardent strum of "Seven Veils," setting a fiery tone for things to come. Far too creative and sly to offer straight-up flamenco, Willie and Lobo throw curve balls in details like "Vista Bahia's" blue-ragging, reflective piano, offsetting a crying violin line before helping the tune morph into a lithe samba. Likewise "Havana Vieja" takes on a resonant sense of history through tender, cornered guitar work, backgrounded by a vivid, whirling tapestry of piano and accordion. "Gypsy Blue" is another gem-a multifaceted adventure that meanders back and forth from an organic, sway-and-swell violin drama, to an uptempo, celebratory dance. Dynamic execution sets the tone here: from hard-bowed, twisting violin melodies to gypsy-fast rhythmic guitar swells, Willie and Lobo make Siete a truly magic number.
