Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 Launches in Atlanta

Anat Cohen leads six others; 16 more cities to go

An all-star tour celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival got under way Saturday in Atlanta and will make 16 more stops through the end of March. The outing, dubbed “Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60,” features a seven-piece ensemble picked by festival curator George Wein. With clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen heading the group as its musical director, the band includes vocalist Karrin Allyson, Randy Brecker on trumpet, guitarist Mark Whitfield, pianist Peter Martin, Larry Grenadier on bass, and drummer Clarence Penn.
