Matthew Goodheart/Dominic Duval
Crossings

Crossings, a sparkling duo between pianist Matthew Goodheart and Duval, is not to be missed, a gem among the recordings here. The focus is on familiar tunes, such as "Willow Weep for Me," "Stella by Starlight," "Moonlight in Vermont" and Monk's "Well You Needn't" and "Rhythm-a-ning." Goodheart turns each melody on its side, rupturing traditional expectations and upturning convention. Duval joins in deliberately studied voices, a fine complement to the pianist's carefully constructed edifices. Like Duval, the pianist is quietly forceful, relying on intellect as much as emotional force.
