David Alan Gross
The Final Answer to Everything
MJA Records

David Alan Gross asks the ultimate question about the meaning of life and searches for the answer quite capably with his alto, joined by pianist Michael Cochrane, bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Bob Moses and guest guitarist Mike Stern. Gross plays with great feeling and richness throughout the record, perhaps nowhere better than on his solo title track, which lasts a mere two minutes, and on Eddie Gomez's "Love Letter to My Father." Cochrane is impressive as both a player and a composer: His "Raindrops" is a fine vehicle for him, as well as for spotlighting Gomez and Moses. And listen to Stern cook on Cochrane's "Free and Clear." It's all good, and presented in a melodic and stylish way.
