More Than You Know
Pickwick

Keyboardist Scott Wilkie shows an impressive range of piano technique on More Than You Know (Narada 70876-15215; 50:47), making short work of sweet, highly ornamented runs in the higher range ("Sign of the Times"), stiff-fingered rags ("The Chicken") and driving, '70s pop hooks ("In Comes the Ansgang," which also breaks periodically into New Age musings). An unfortunate side effect of this range is a disconnected, hit-and-miss feel to the album as a whole. For every chop-showing "Fruit Sandwich," with its dynamic Latin groove and tight rhythmic changes, there's an over-puffed arrangement like "Sign of the Times," or dull, Casiotone keyboard-recalling "Back from the Beach." Best offerings here include the light-blue funky, the aforementioned "The Chicken" and the gentle, awe-struck piano painting "Whale Song," which arcs and stretches with guest Eric Marienthal's long-noted soprano sax blowing, as well as Wilkie's lovely, meditative playing.
