Frank Kimbrough/Joe Locke
Saturn's Child
OmniTone

Pianist Kimbrough joins with vibraphonist Joe Locke to take on a formidable challenge in their set: not only must they deal with a seminal sound in this music-that of John Lewis and the recently-departed Milt Jackson-but with its latter day saints as well-Chick Corea and Gary Burton. The influence goes beyond mere sound: there is more than one echo of "Django" in the repertoire, all by the players save Charlie Haden's "Silence." The sound is sumptuous and the playing very musical, though it seems somehow all of a mood rather than nine different pieces.
