Nellie McKay & Turtle Island Quartet Performing Jazz Classics on Tour

Material by Billie Holiday, Billy Strayhorn and more

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nellie McKay is collaborating with the Turtle Island Quartet for A Flower is a Lovesome Thing, a tour featuring the music of Billie Holiday, Billy Strayhorn and the Weimar cabaret of the 1920s. According to a press release, “Their shared love for the iconic tunes of Billy Strayhorn, Billie Holiday and other musical diamonds from the 1920s is the basis for the program, named for a Strayhorn standard.”

Some of the tunes covered include Holiday’s “These Foolish Things” and “I Cover the Waterfront,” songs made famous by Marlene Dietrich such as “Ich Bin Die Feshce Lola” and “Black Market” and music from Doris Day and Strayhorn. They also include Turtle Island and Nellie McKay originals.
