SFJAZZ Collective Releases Ninth Album, a Tribute to Corea

10th anniversary tour also announced

The SFJAZZ Collective has announced the release of its ninth limited-edition set, SFJAZZ Collective: Music of Chick Corea and New Compositions, Live at SFJAZZ Center. Only 2,000 copies will be produced. Available exclusively from SFJAZZ, the hand-numbered two-CD set was recorded live March 28-31 this year at San Francisco’s new SFJAZZ Center. The release features new arrangements of works by Chick Corea as well as new original compositions by Collective members. This recording captured the new lineup with drummer Obed Calvaire, replacing longtime member Eric Harland.

During their October U.S. tour, which begins this week in San Francisco, the Collective will perform material from each of the composers to which they’ve paid tribute since their inception, including Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Stevie Wonder and Corea, plus many of the member’s original compositions. The Collective is also welcoming a new member, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, replacing veteran member Stefon Harris. Wolf joins the band on the upcoming October tour.

SFJAZZ has released eight previous limited-edition live sets since 2004, as well as a concert DVD filmed at 2007’s Jazz à Vienne Festival in France. All recordings and more information about the SFJAZZ Collective and SFJAZZ can be found at sfjazz.org.
