Kurt Rosenwinkel
Intuit
Criss Cross Jazz

Kurt Rosenwinkel is a relative newcomer, but at his best he's an exciting and interesting player. Intuit features a quartet with pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Tim Pleasant. Rosenwinkel's lines include long figures built on repeated riffs and practically arhythmic abstractions, while Kanan is an elegant melodicist along Flanagan-Harris lines. The piano backing is often fragmented, which matches the leaders' approach, while the bass and drums play it relatively straight. Again the program contains a lot of familiar tunes, and the readings of bop classics like "Conception" and "Sippin' at Bells" are more interesting than the fairly straight versions of "Darn That Dream" or "When Sonny Gets Blue".
