Dave Stryker
All the Way

This writer (like many others) has bemoaned the fact that the current generation of hornmen seems anonymous compared to the original hard-boppers. One instrument whose practitioners compare favorably to the previous generation is the guitar. There's no new Wes in sight, but there are several players who can aspire to being as effective as the next level exemplified by Farlow, Pass, Raney, et al. Dave Stryker is near the head of the new class, and All the Way is a strong statement in a challenging format, a guitar-bass-drums trio program of familiar standards. Scott Colley and Bill Stewart are impressive collaborators; the group feeling never flags as Stryker leads the way with intelligent arrangements, a rich sound, interesting voicings, and strongly melodic lines that build well. He is a very musical guitarist.
