L. A. Jazz Society to Honor Escovedo Family Oct. 27
Hubert Laws to receive lifetime achievement award
The Los Angeles Jazz Society will pay tribute to Latin jazz artists Sheila E., her father, Pete Escovedo, and brothers Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo at the Society’s 30th Anniversary Jazz Tribute Awards Dinner and Concert at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City on Oct. 27. The family has been selected as the Society’s 2013 Jazz Honoree.
Flutist and saxophonist Hubert Laws will be presented with the L.A. Jazz Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Previous Jazz Tribute honorees include Arturo Sandoval, Poncho Sanchez, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Johnny Mandel, Jack Sheldon, Horace Silver, Buddy Collete and Louie Bellson. Red Norvo, Frank Capp, Buddy Childers, Martha Gibbs, Bud Shank and Jeff Clayton have been among the artists been honored with the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Film critic Leonard Maltin will serve as host/emcee of the event. Hugh Hefner is the Honorary 30th Anniversary Tribute Chair and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is the Honorary Dinner Chair. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Performances will take place by Sheila E., Pete Escovedo, Peter Michael Escovedo, Juan Escovedo, the Hubert Laws Trio, Alex Smith Trio and Charlie Owens, Maestro Delbert Taylor and Combo.
