World beat experiments abound, and some of them are more irritating pretension than fodder for the utopian dance floor. The German group known as Dissidenten is something else, again: an openly border-crossing project that works up its own brand of multi-cultural charm, well-represented on the new one, Instinctive Traveller (Blue Jackel 5015; 47:49). Celebrating 17 years in existence, the collective is a pioneering project in which diversity of cultural input is the raison d'etre: slide guitars, oud, veena, Manfred Schoof's jazz-tinged trumpet interlace with electronic-techno elements. In the center of it all, there's a certain beauty in that the vocal star in this danceable admix is the soulful 18-year-old Bajka, the daughter of charter member, bassist Uve Mullrich. Dissidenten traverses the globe, tastefully.
